Lesson Context
This is the children's second lesson on 'Sport'. Last week the children focused on the 'ich' conjugation of sports but this week they will learn all of the conjugations of 'spielen', 'schwimmen', 'rennen' and 'turnen'. 'Spielen' will be the main focus and the children will learn the conjugations through the game 'Secret Signal'. You will point out how the conjugated endings are similar for the other verbs, including 'haben' from a few lessons ago. The children will put their new knowledge into practise in a 'match up the cards' activity and will end the lesson trying to 'hold' complex sentences in their heads in the 'running dictation' game.
Resources
Power point presentation
Hand outs which the children can take home for revision
'Match up' packs. Cut up the match up sheets at the bottom of the page and then give each set to pairs to work on
'Running Dictation' sheets - put up around the classroom but not so the children can read them from their seats
Flashcards - 'Weekday and Family' - the activities vocabulary will be useful this lesson
Slide 2 - Main Introduction
Communicate LO and SC
Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of Weekdays and Family
The children should know how to play the flashcard game by now so explain that they should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. The 'Activities' and 'Weekdays' vocabulary will be relevant to this lesson
Slide 4 - Treibst du Sport?
Go over this vocabulary from Sport 1. Choose some random children and ask them 'treibst du Sport?' They should answer with one of the sentences on the board. Explain that if the children want to be really clever, they can include the word 'gern' in their answer, which means 'like'. This goes after the verb. Give a few examples:
Ich spiele gern Fussball - I like to play football
Ich spiele gern Hockey - I like to play hockey
Ich schwimme gern - I like to swim
Slide 5 - To play - spielen
Tell the children that last week they were just talking about themselves doing sport but this week they will talk about other people, so they will need all of the other conjugations of 'spielen'.
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide and ask questions such as how would you say:
*He plays football
*They play hockey
*We play rugby
Slide 6 - To have - haben
I have included this slide from the 'haben' lessons so you can show the children the patterns in the endings. Flit between slides 5 and 6 to show the children how the endings are similar. The patterns will become more obvious once you introduce the conjugations of 'schwimmen', 'rennen' and 'turnen'
Slide 7 - Secret Signal
Using the vocabulary on the slide, ask one child to leave the room and agree with the rest of the class on a secret signal, such as touching your nose. Choose a child to perform this signal at any given moment. Bring the first child back into the room and ask the class to say 'ich spiele' (the first item on the list) in a chant. Every time the class sees the designated person do the agreed secret signal, they move onto the next phrase in the list - du spielst. The child has to guess who is doing the signal before the class gets to the bottom of the list. If the child who went outside guesses correctly, they earn a reward. If the class get to the bottom, the 'signaller' and somebody else from the class, earn a reward
Slides 8, 9 and 10 - Conjugations of schwimmen, rennen and turnen
Just as you did with 'to play' on slide 5, tell the children that last week they were just talking about themselves doing sport but this week they will talk about other people, so they will also need all of the other conjugations of 'schwimmen', 'rennen' and 'turnen'
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides and ask questions such as how would you say:
*He swims
*They run
*We do gymnastics
Point out the patterns in the endings and compare with 'spielen' and 'haben'. The children have all of the conjugations on their hand outs
Slide 11 - When? - Days of the Week
As you did in 'Sport 1', sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide, which should be familiar to the children. Ask some translation questions such as:
On Monday he plays football
On Tuesday they swim
Encourage the children to put the verb in second place:
Am Montag spielt er Fussball
Am Dienstag schwimmen Sie
Slide 12 - Translation
On their tables, get the children to go through the slide with a partner and translate each sentence into German. After a few minutes, randomly select a child for each sentence and reward them if they are able to translate correctly
Slide 13 - Match up
Each pair of children has a pack of the match up cards. The pair has to match up the German sentences in their bag to the corresponding English sentences. There are 15 sentences to match up. When they are finished they put up their hands/do a signal such as the 'Mobot'. When each pair puts up their hands check their answer and tell them 'richtig' or 'falsch'. Reward the fastest finishers
*Extension - if some children finish very quickly you can send them to slower pairs to help them
Slide 25 - Running Dictation/Plenary
Pin copies of the running dictation sheet (bottom of the page) around the classroom. Ask the children to either work with a partner or with their group. One child has to go to the sheet and read it, then return to their group and say it out loud. The receiving group/partner has to write down what the 'runner' says. As their are 15 lines on the sheet, the runner will have to go backwards and forwards several times between the paper and the group. Someone from the winning group will earn a reward. Make each runner go to the sheet that is furthest away from them
Assessment and Evidence
Observe and ask questions
Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the 'Running Dictation' activity
Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 15 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
