Lesson Context
This is the children's first lesson on 'Sport' but they will be familiar with much of the vocabulary due to the 'Activities' parts of the 'Weekdays' and 'Family' lessons. There is a focus on the verb 'spielen' this lesson, but the children will also learn the verbs for 'swim', 'run' and 'do gymnastics'. This lesson the children will only use the 'ich' form with these verbs and next week they will use other conjugations. The sport vocabulary and verbs will be combined with days of the week and times of the day and this will be done through fun activities such as 'Find someone who', 'Hangman' as well as some translation excercises
Resources
Power point presentation
Hand outs which the children can take home for revision
'Find someone who ...' sheets (You might want to print this on the back of the hand out)
Flashcards - 'Weekday and Family' - the activities vocabulary will be useful this lesson
Slide 2 - Main Introduction
Communicate LO and SC
Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of Weekdays and Family
The children should know how to play the flashcard game by now so explain that they should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. The 'Activities' and 'Weekdays' vocabulary will be relevant to this lesson
Slide 4 - To play - spielen
We have come across this verb before in the 'Weekdays' and 'Family' lessons. Explain that this is a verb just like haben (to have) and sein (to be) and we will be using this verb this lesson. Tell the children that we will just be talking about ourselves doing sport this lesson but next week we will talk about other people, so we will need all of the other conjugations of 'spielen'
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide
Slides 5 - 10 - 'spielen' with different sports
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on these slides, stopping on each slide to ask a random child 'treibst du Sport' - the child should answer with 'Ja' and the 'ich spiele ...' sentence on the board.
Slides 11 - 13 - sports with other verbs
Explain that just like in English, you don't 'play' gymnastics, running or swimming. It is the same in German. Sag mir nach the vocabulary on these slide and ask 'treibst du Sport' on each slide, with the children answering as they did for slides 5 - 10
Slide 14 - Treibst du Sport?
Go over this vocabulary once more. Choose some random children and ask them 'treibst du Sport?' They should answer with one of the sentences on the board. Explain that if the children want to be really clever, they can include the word 'gern' in their answer, which means 'like'. This goes after the verb. Give a few examples:
Ich spiele gern Fussball - I like to play football
Ich spiele gern Hockey - I like to play hockey
Ich schwimme gern - I like to swim
On their tables, get the children to spend a few minutes asking the other children 'treibst du Sport?' The children can make up answers even if they don't like the sport and they can give different answers to different children
Slide 15 - Find Someone who... Sport
Using the 'Find someone who...' sheet at the bottom of the page, the children circulate around the classroom, asking pupils the 'treibst du Sport' question at the top of their hand out (and on the slide). The children answer with the red vocabulary on the slide and hand out and they finish the answer appropriately, just like they have been practising. The asker writes the name of the person under the relevant sport. They can write the name of additional children in the boxes if any sport is popular but the aim is to fill in all of the boxes with names. Encourage the children to use 'gern'. There is a blue line through the middle of each box. Tell the children to write names of children who used 'gern' under the blue line. Once completed, ask the class to share their findings
*Extension - Stop the class halfway through and encourage them to ask and answer the question without looking at their sheet
Slide 16 - When? - Days of the Week
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide, which should be familiar to the children. Ask some translation questions such as:
On Monday I play football
On Tuesday I swim
Encourage the children to put the verb in second place
Am Montag spiele ich Fussball
Am Dienstag schwimme ich
Slide 17 - When? - Time of Day
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide. Point out that when you combine the day with time of day, it is one word in German e.g. Am Montagmorgen, Am Dienstagnachmittag etc ...
Again, ask the children some translation questions, encouraging them to put the verb in the second position, such as:
Evenings I play rugby - Abends spiele ich Rugby
On Thursday morning I do gymnastics - Am Donnerstagmorgen turne ich
Slide 18 - Translation 1 - German to English
On their tables, get the children to go through the slide with a partner and translate each sentence into English. After a few minutes, randomly select a child for each sentence and reward them if they are able to translate correctly
Slide 19 - Translation 2 - English to German
This slide is also on the children's hand out. Get the children to write the German translation next to the English on their hand outs. Everything they need to do this is on the hand out above where they are writing. Give the children a few more minutes to complete this and then reward those who are able to translate correctly
Slide 20 - Hangman/Plenary
The sentences have to begin with a day/time of day/both and end with sport e.g. Am Sonntag turne ich
Model task first and then let some children come to the front with their own sentences. I found these rules work well for the classroom:
* The class are only allowed to guess 5 letters and then they must start guessing the sentence
* Whoever gets the sentence can come to the front with their own sentence
Assessment and Evidence
Observe and ask questions
Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the 'Hangman' activity
Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 21 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
