Lesson Context

This is the children's first lesson on 'houses' and lots of essential grammar is taught in an engaging way. The children will learn that in German you can easily create new words by adding words together and they will also learn how to use 'to be', not only with 'house' vocabulary but also in the wider context of all of the German they have learnt so far. The children will do some writing this week and the 'ist' and 'sind' part of 'to be' will also be used next week. The children will learn the rooms in a house, together with how you say a person's location in the house

Hand outs which the children can take home for revision - This includes the inside of a house for the children to work with a partner and also the sentences that they will need to translate into German

Communicate LO and SC

Highlight the 'blue SC' and tell the children that by the end of the lesson, they should be able to translate all of the sentences on the back of their hand outs

Slides 3 - 6 - Main rooms and garden

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on these slides and ask how you would say 'I am ...' in these places, remind the children of 'ich bin'. Flit between screen 4 and 5 and ask the children what they think 'Zimmer' means

Slide 7  - Other rooms

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide and again highlight the word 'Zimmer' on the end of 'Kinderzimmer' and 'Gästezimmer'. Point out that in German it is easy to make new words simply by adding words together. Ask the children how they would say living room door (die Wohnzimmertür) or bedroom window (das Schlafzimmerfenster)

Slide 8 - das ist, hier ist

Model the task using slide 8. The children will use the house on the back of their hand outs. Point at all of the rooms in the house and use either 'das ist ...' or 'hier ist ...' Explain that in 2 minutes, you will randomly select and reward a child who can name and put into a sentence each part of the house. Give the children 2 minutes with a partner on their tables to practise the task

Slide 9 - House charades

The children will compete in teams for this activity. A volunteer from each team comes up, is given a room (or window/door) to act by the teacher, and then has to act out something they would do in that room. Each team is only allowed a maximum of 2 guesses so they must work together to guess. The team who guessed the correct room in the shortest amount of time wins. If the team makes 2 incorrect guesses then they are out.  

Slide 10 - to be (sein)

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides. Point out that 'are' in 'you are' is different to the 'are' in 'they are' and 'we are'. Now get the children to translate some sentences using vocabulary from previous lessons such as:

I am red

You are the strawberry

He is blue

She is the tiger

It is South America

We are the shoes

They are the socks

Ask the children to make up their own sentences using 'sein' and see if the other children in the class can translate them

Slide 11 - Translation

Now get the children to translate the sentences on the slide using 'sein' and the 'house' vocabulary from this lesson. They can use their hand outs to help them. Do number 1 with them but then give the children a few minutes to translate them with a partner. After a few minutes randomly select and reward children who can translate the sentences

Now ask the children to translate the 10 sentences on the back of their hand outs. They may write the translations down underneath the English. Choose 5 sentences and write them on a white board (but down show the children). Explain that after this activity you will randomly select and reward any child who can translate the 5 on your board, as per the blue success criteria

Slide 12 - Plenary - Who is speaking?

Ask a child to come to the front of the class and stand with his/her back to the other children. Someone from the class then says something from this week's lesson in German (in a funny voice if they wish) and the person at the front has to guess who said the sentence. If the person at the front guesses correctly then they stay where they are, if not the 'speaker' gets to go to the front. The person at the front has the chance of earning a bonus reward if they are also able to correctly translate the sentence into English
