Lesson Context
This is the children's second lesson on 'hobbies' and they will be introduced to lots of new verbs to try to help them express what their interests are more accurately. The children will communicate their hobbies to many of their classmates, especially in the 'Line up' activity. They will learn different ways of asking questions and there are 2 translation activities, the first being 'hide and reveal' in relation to questioning and the second being a fun 'who wants to be a millionaire' style quiz.
Resources
Power point presentation
Hand outs which the children can take home for revision - this file also includes the 'Line up' activity
Flashcards - 'to be' and 'to have' verb practise
Slide 2 - Main Introduction
Communicate LO and SC
Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of 'to be' and 'to have'
The children should know how to play the flashcard game by now so explain that they should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it.
Slides 4 - 5 - To like and 'mögen oder gern'
Go through slide 4 and then remind the children that they have been using another word to express 'like' - gern. Slide 5 should help to clarify the difference in usage of the words. Gern is usually placed after a verb to express liking of the activity but mögen' (or the mag form) is the verb, so can be used alone. Ask the children some translation questions such as:
They like rugby
They like to play rugby
We like to eat
We like the pineapple
Under the blue line I have put 2 sentences which pretty much mean the same thing. In German, you can roughly translate an English 'ing' word with the full infinitive e.g. Swimming - Schwimmen
Slide 6 - 11 - New 'Hobby' Verbs - read, dance, sing, hear/listen to, watch TV, do/make
Go through these verbs with the children. You may want to point out the following:
Slide 6 - lesen - The 'du' form and the er/sie/es form are the same and slightly irregular - liest (not lest)
Slide 7 - tanzen - As 'lesen' but 'tanzt'
Slide 10 - fernsehen - a seperable verb - this may ring a bell from 'der Fernseher'
After going through the verbs, ask the children some translation questions such as:
She listens to music
She likes art
Mornings we sing and afternoons we like to read
I make a cake and I dance with friends
Slide 12 - Questions 'Hide and Reveal'
When you go onto this slide, only the German will appear. Go through the questions with the children and ask them to see if the can translate them, using the back of their hand out (next to the copy of the slide) to write their translations down.
When the children have all written their translations, reveal the correct translations, one by one.
Now get the children to write the 5 German question translations underneath the questions in the boxes, beneath the blue lines.
Now give the children 5 minutes to write their answers to the questions in the right hand boxes, German above the blue line and the English translation below. Tell them they will be bringing and using their completed sheets with them in the next activity
Slide 13 - Line up (Reiht ein)
Bringing their hand out with them, the children form two lines, facing each other. They take it in turns to ask and answer the questions, using the answers they have filled in on their sheets. Challenge the children to try to translate what their partner has said. Have a signal (e.g. a bell) and when you signal the children from one line move down to the next partner. The signal should be spaced about one minute apart. This way the children should have a German conversation with around fifteen different children. The children who are feeling confident can hold their sheets against their chests and see if they say their 'hobby' sentences from memory.
Plenary - Slides 14 - 33 - Wer wird Millionär?
'Zusammen' activity. Children to work with a partner using a wipe board and pen but today we will using the 'who wants a be a millionaire' style slides.
*Extension - Get the children to write the German before any of the options appear.
*Note - I feel it helps learning to let the children have a 'break' after question 3 so that they can look and learn from their sheets. Go back to the quiz after 2 minutes 'break'.
*Note - The children will need to be familiar with 'Hobbies 1' in order to answer questions 4 and 5
Assessment and Evidence
Observe and ask questions
Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the 'wer wird Millionär' activity. Encourage some children to read out some of the answers from the 'Line up' activity
Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 34 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
