Lesson Context
This is the children's second lesson on town/directions and they will revisit much of the vocabulary from 'town/directions 1', but they will also learn 5 new 'useful places'. They will practise and revise the '15 places' they have learnt in a 'corners' game and they will also practise putting these places into 'directions' sentences in a translation activity. The children will end the lesson using all of their new knowledge to ask for, give and follow directions using maps
Resources
Powerpoint presentation
*Sheets to put up around the walls for the corners activity (power point file)
*Cards for the Kartentausch activity
Hand outs which the children can take home for revision
A map for the directions activity
*Note - these are the same PowerPoint file. There are 18 slides so for Kartentausch, simply print 6 or 9 slides per sheet and use that for the Kartentausch cards
Slide 2 - Main Introduction
Communicate LO and SC
Slide 3 - Starter activity - Der Kartentausch - Card Swap
Using the 'PowerPoint' cards, the children find a partner with their hand up, show their partner the picture whilst covering the word with a finger and the partner has to say the German word. Show the correct answer to your partner. Swap cards. Hand up. Find a new partner with their hand up and repeat.
Slides 4 - 13 - Useful places in town
As you did last week , go through this vocabulary with the children and mention the following:
*Letterbox is the same word as post box (Briefkasten)
*Krankenhaus - Krank means 'sick' and haus means 'house' - Also wagen is a word for 'car' (Volkswagen) so Krankenwagen would mean 'ambulance'
*Flughafen - Flug means 'flight' and Hafen means 'port'
Slides 14 - 18 - Useful places in town - 5 new
Go through this vocabulary with the children. 'Café' and 'Restaurant' are similar to English and the children have already learnt 'Kino' and 'Schule' in previous lessons.
Tell the children that in 2 minutes they are going to play 'Corners' using the 15 posters around the classroom and that they should spend the 2 minutes trying to memorise as many of the 15 places in town that they can. The places are all on their hand outs
Slide 19 - Corners
Have the 15 'places in town' placed on the wall around the classroom. Now randomly select up to 4 children using lollipops and these 4 will compete against each other. Simply say one of the places in English and the 1st person to walk to the correct poster wins a reward. You could further challenge the children by saying a sentence including the word (such as 'where is the airport') and the winner only wins a reward if s/he translates the whole sentence
Slide 20 - Directions (use 'das Hotel' in the examples)
As you did last week, go through the vocabulary with the children. Above the first blue line is for the person asking for directions. Point out that 'es gibt' means there is/are and 'gibt es' means is/are there. This is a really useful phrase to know. Between the blue lines is the vocabulary that the person giving directions will need. You may also want to point out that stop is 'halt'. Point out the use of the word schön (beautiful) under the second blue line
Choose a child to practise having a German conversation with. You ask for directions to the hotel and the child has to give directions. You could follow the directions and walk to the Hotel which should be up on the wall or just remain where you are and listen to the directions
Working with a partner, give the children 2 minutes to ask for and give directions to the hotel and other places on the walls. The pairs should remain in their chairs
Slide 21 - Translation
Bring up all of the English vocabulary on this slide. This is also on the hand outs. Give the children 5 - 10 minutes to write the German translations next to the English on their hand outs. After the time is up, randomly select 1 child per answer, reveal the answer and reward the child accordingly (the answers come up one at a time)
Slide 22 - Directions on a Map
Using the map, one child asks for directions to a certain place and the other child gives the directions. The children should use the vocabulary form slide 20 to do this, and this slide is also on the children's hand outs. I would recommend that the 'asker' starts with their finger on the little red man and then follows the instructions and their partner gives them. I would also suggest that the map is printed out on the back of the hand outs
*Feel free to make your own map. I have drawn one for use to download at the bottom of the page
Assessment and Evidence
Observe and ask questions
Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the 'directions on a map' activity.
Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 23 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
*Note - 'Kartentausch' and 'Corners' use the same PowerPoint file. There are 18 slides so for Kartentausch, simply print 6 or 9 slides per sheet and use that for the Kartentausch cards
