Introduction 2

Lesson Context

This is the children's second German lesson and the LO and SCs are the same as that for the first. The children learnt how to introduce themselves in German last lesson and that knowledge will be consolidated this lesson. The children will also consolidate chants and classroom commands which are intended to be embedded into other lessons. A flashcard game called 'Kartenspiel' und a team game called 'Zusammen', as well as our first celebration 'Das war gut', will also be introduced this week. Feel free to make up your own celebrations and please let me know what they are! The first Zeit für Deutsch song, 'Wie siehst du aus', will be introduced as well as the teddy Frog (der Frosch).

Consolidate last weeks commands and chant using 'Sag mir nach' (repeat after me) method. Say instructions randomly and the children have to follow e.g. say 'stehe auf' and they have to stand up. Again, you could make a game out of it by getting two children to compete against each other. The first child to do the correct action gets a reward.

For the chant, simply sing 'ich und du, wir hören zu' and the children sing it back to you. Do this twice. You could also make a group competition out of the chant e.g. the best table singing 'ich und du, wir hören zu' back wins a reward. You will use this chant every time you want to get the children's attention in all German lessons.

Slide 8 - Introductions

Using 'sag mir nach', quickly get the children to repeat the greetings questions and answers with correct pronunciation. Model a German conversation with one child, starting with the red greeting and working your way down the power point slide.  Then get two strong children to model having a German conversation with each other.  With a partner on their tables, the children use their sheets to have a German conversation and give classroom commands to each other. Children who are feeling confident can turn their sheets over to see if they can have a German conversation, give and act out commands without looking.

Slide 9 - Kartenspiel (Flashcard Game)

Explain and model the Flashcard game:

• Children to work in pairs and the pairs agree on who is the teacher and who is the student first. The teacher has all of the cards
• The teacher shows the front of the card (English side) to the student and the student tries to say the back (German)
• If the student gets it right the teacher says 'gut' or 'wunderbar' and gives the student the card
• If the student gets it wrong or waits more than 10 seconds then the teacher tells the student the German and shows him/her the German side. The teacher then  turns the card back around and asks the student again what the German is. Repeat until the student gets it right and when the student gets it right the teacher says 'gut' or 'wunderbar' and gives the student the card
• After a set time the teacher and student switch roles
• Right at the end, test some children with cards in front of the whole class and reward them for getting the German correct. Tell the class beforehand that you will do this

*Note - You will be using the Flashcard set 'Intro and Colours'. This includes 'Colours' vocabulary so will begin to prepare the children for next week's lesson 

Slide 10 - Wie siehst du aus?

Teach the children the lyrics to the song using 'sag mir nach'. Model singing the song to the tune of  'The Adams Family'. Practise as a whole class and give the children some ideas for actions.

• Inter-table competition - the tables practise in their groups for 5 minutes and then perform for the whole class. The winning table gets a reward.

Alternatively, you could run an 'individual competition' where children are chosen randomly using lollipop sticks. Tell the children beforehand that you will do this. If the chosen child doesn't want to perform alone then s/he can choose a partner.

Slide 11 - Drei Fragen

Children get chosen randomly using lollipop sticks. The chosen child earns a reward for saying a greeting (such as Guten Morgen) and answering all 3 questions with good German:

1. Wie heißt du?
2. Wie alt bist du?
3. Wie gehts?

Introduce the children to their first 'celebration'. In German lessons, when somebody does something good everybody does a chant. Der Frosch will help us with our first celebration.

To the tune of 'That's the way aha aha, I like it aha aha', everybody chants:

"Das war gut aha aha, ich mag es aha aha, das war gut aha aha, ich mag es aha aha" (That was good aha aha, I like it aha aha x2)

Get der Frosch to demonstrate some actions.

Slide 12 - Introduce the Frosch and Turn Toss

Explain that the frog will be part of our German lessons from now on. Model activity using the Frosch:

1. Ask one question and then throw the Frosch to another child
2. The child who catches the Frosch answers the question and then asks their own question to a different child
3. Continue until the Frosch has been caught and thrown by most children

Slide 13 - Plenary - Zusammen (together)

Children to work with a partner using a wipe board and pen

• Say something we have learnt over the last 2 weeks in English (e.g. My name is John)
• The children work together quietly to write the German on their wipe board
• After the time limit the children reveal their answers simultaneously
• Say a new phrase in English and repeat 

*If time permits, you could play 'who is speaking', as you did in 'Introduction 1'. This is a great way to end any lesson
