Lesson Context

This is the children's fifth German lesson.  Consolidation of previous vocabulary learnt will take place at the start using flashcards (das Kartenspiel). The structure 'Zusammen' will be used for the plenary. Children are aware of vocabulary such as 'das ist' and this knowledge will be reinforced this week. Grammatically, the children will be made aware that German has many different words for 'the' and they will practise that today. The Zeit für Deutsch song for parts of the body will be the German version of 'Heads, shoulders, knees and toes' and the children will learn this today. 'Simon Says' (or Hans Sagt) will also form part of future Zeit für Deutsch sessions and the children will play this to practise their new 'Body Parts' vocabulary.

Main Introduction

Slide 2

Communicate LO and SC - point out that 'Lob' means 'praise'

Slide 3 - Kartenspiel

Explain to the children that when they play 'Kartentausch' or 'Kartenspiel' in the future they will be using 'Lob' (praise) when they play. The children should already know 'gut' and 'wunderbar'. 'Sag mir nach' the praise phrases on slide 3 and then play the Kartenspiel, rewarding the children who use the 'Lob' words

*The children will learn the parts of the body, together with some clothes, which will be the next topic

Slide 4 - Was ist das?

'Sag mir nach' (repeat after me) 'was ist das' and 'das ist'

Explain to the children that they will now be learning the German words for parts of the body. In English we have 'the' but in German there are different words, depending on the gender of the noun. Point it out as you go through the 'body slides' and mention that plurals are always 'die'

Slide 5 - 18 - Parts of the Body

Go through the parts of the body using 'sag mir nach'. As you go, ask random children 'Was ist das' whilst pointing at the slide or your body. Children to reply with 'das ist ...'

On their tables, the children work with a partner and point at parts of their body, asking the question 'was ist das?' The partner replies with 'das ist ...' The children can use the vocabulary sheets (below) to help them.

Slide 19 - Simon (Hans) Says

Explain that we are now going to play 'Simon Says' in German. Play as a whole class first. The first child to touch the correct body part wins. Then use lollipop stick to randomly choose 2 children to compete against each other. The first child to touch the correct part of the body wins a reward. Extend by saying 2 body parts.

Further extension - randomly choose one child and ask 'was ist das' or 'ist das ...?'

Slide 20 - Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Model Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in German. Point out that in German the face order is a bit different and you include chin (Kinn). E.g. Augen, Ohren, Nase, Mund und Kinn. This song will be used in future 'Zeit für Deutsch' sessions.

Model the song with actions and then sing together as a class.

Inter-table competition - the children practise for 3 minutes and then perform with their group in front of the class. The winning table wins a reward (and a 'Lieblingsantwort' or 'Das war gut' celebration).

Alternatively you could use lollipop sticks to choose individuals to sing the song instead of groups. The chosen child can select a partner to join them if they wish.

Slide 21 - Plenary - Zusammen (Together)

Children to work with a partner using a wipe board and pen

  • Say something we have learnt today in English (e.g. That is the foot)
  • The children work together quietly to write the German on their wipe board
  • After the time limit the children reveal their answers simultaneously
  • Say a new phrase in English and repeat

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Refer back to the success criteria during and after 'Zusammen'

Check achievement of the Success Criteria by questioning randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
