Lesson Context

This is the first lesson on 'Family' and it begins with a fun activity where the children can put on funny voices and pretend to be someone else. This will then help you to compare 'heiße' with 'heißt' when you are talking about other people's names. Through Bart Simpson, the children will then be able see how to say what their family members are called and then they should be able to make sentences using 'ich habe' '... heißt' and even other vocabulary they learnt in previous lessons. Following that, there is a memory game (wer fehlt) where the children have to guess the family member missing from the screen and the lesson will end with a treasure hunt, which serves to consolidate sentences about family and also revise the 'activities' vocabulary from last week.

Main Introduction

Slide 2

Communicate LO and SC

Highlight the 'Blue' Success Criteria - 'I can tell someone what family members I have and how many'. Explain that during the 'deine Familie' activity (slide 13), someone who is able to do this well will earn a reward.

Slide 3 - Wie heißt du? (Who is speaking)

This is a fun warm up activity and should help the children compare 'heiße' and 'heißt' on the next few slides. One child stands at the front with their back to the class. Other selected children then say 'ich heiße ...' with a disguised voice and also the wrong name. The child at the front has to guess who is talking. If the child guesses correctly, s/he stays at the front. If not, the other child comes to the front.

Slides 4 - 9 - Members of my family are called ...

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides, pointing out that when talking about someone else, you use 'heißt' instead of 'heiße'. Compare this to what happens with 'spiele' and 'spielt' from last week. Ask the occasional question such as 'wie heißt er/sie?'

Slides 10 - 12 - meine Familie

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides and again, ask the occasional question such as 'wie heißt er/sie?' (while pointing at a character).

*Note - you may need to explain that you have made up Bart's uncle and nan and you are also pretending that Bart has a twin brother!!

Slide 13 - deine Familie

Remind the children that this is the 'Blue SC' slide and sag mir nach the vocabulary. Model and translate a few sentences such as 'ich habe einen Bruder, er heißt Liam'. Then say some sentences in German and see if the children can translate them into English. Finally say some sentences in English and see if the children can translate them into German. Model how to talk for 30 seconds about your family. You can include vocabulary from previous lessons such as the person's  age, where they live and even if they are tall or small.

Give the children 3 minutes to tell their partner about their family and challenge them to do it without stopping. They may use slide 13 and their hand outs to help them. Explain beforehand that you will choose 3 children randomly using lollipop sticks and those 3 must talk about their family for 30 seconds. The best effort wins a reward.

Slides 14 - 23 - Wer fehlt (Who is missing)?

This is the same game as 'was fehlt' as used in Clothes 2, but this time members of Bart's family will disappear instead of items of clothing. Sag mir nach (repeat after me) the phrases 'wer fehlt' und examples such as 'meine Schwester fehlt'. Explain that one of the people will soon disappear and if the chosen child is able to tell me what is missing in a full German sentence (e.g. mein Onkel fehlt) they will win a reward.

*Note 1 - you can flick between the screens to make it more exciting and when you do this in the future you can copy the slide and remove different items.

*Note 2 - Point out that the children are using 'fehlt' and not 'fehle' because they are talking about someone else, just like 'heißt' and 'spielt'

Slides 24 - 25 - Treasure Hunt

Have the 'Meine Schwester' treasure hunt sheet on the board for you to model the task. Ask the children to turn over their hand outs and explain that the first person to finish the sheet earns a reward. Number 1 is 'Meine Schwester' and pretend to look for (and find) it. Now write 'Meine Schwester spielt fussball' on the board and explain that the children have to make a sentence combining the Simpsons character and the activity on the sheet. The activities are the same as what the children learnt last lesson. Write 'spielt' in large writing and explain that the children will need this in lots of their answers, especially with words similar to English such as 'Rugby', 'Gitarre' and 'Tennis'. Point out that 6-8 are different to 1-5 and for these you just need the 'relative' e.g. 'meine Mutter' or 'mein Papa'. Finally mention the two activities at the bottom of slide 25 and make sure the children are aware that for these two they use the sentences on the slide instead of 'spielt'.

Now let the children search for the answers around the classroom and look out for the first finisher. Give the children around 5 minutes to complete as many as they can. When everyone is back in their seats ask the first finisher 3 questions such as 'wer spielt Tennis' or 'wer geht ins Kino'. The child should simply answer by reading from their sheet.

Slide 26 - Hangman/Plenary

The sentences have to begin with a family member and end with an activity e.g. Mein Opa spielt Rugby

Model task first and then let some children come to the front with their own sentences. I found these rules work well for the classroom:

* The class are only allowed to guess 5 letters and then they must start guessing the sentence

* Whoever gets the sentence can come to the front with their own sentence

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Make a note of any children who struggled or excelled at the treasure hunt activity

Refer back to the success criteria after Hangman

Before the 'deine Familie' activity, remind the children that this is the blue success criteria
