Lesson Context
Most of the vocabulary will be new to the children, although they may recognise parts of words such as 'Schule' and 'Tisch'. Once the children have learnt the vocabulary in this topic, they will be able to communicate the German words for items in an environment where they spend a lot of time; their classroom. There is a lot of vocabulary to learn relating to classroom items and prepositions and to aid that there are fun activities such as 'Hans sagt' and 'Ich packe in meiner Schultasche. The lesson will end with the children combining their new classroom vocabulary with prepositions in the 'wo ist der Bleistift' activity
Resources
Powerpoint presentation
'Book and School' flashcards for the starter activity
Hand outs which the children can take home for revision
Slide 2 - Main Introduction
Communicate LO and SC
Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of 'Book and School' vocabulary
Explain that the children should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. Reward children for using the 'Lob' words.
Slides 4 - 22 - New classroom vocabulary
Go through and 'sag mir nach' the vocabulary on the slides with the children. You may want to point out the following:
Slide 4 - das Klassenzimmer - die Klasse (the class), das Zimmer (the room)
Slide 5 - die Schulsachen - die Schule (the school), die Sachen (the things)
Slide 6 - die Schultasche - die Tasche (the bag)
Slides 10, 11 and 12 - all contain 'stift'
Slide 16 - der Kugelschreiber - Kugel (sphere), der Schreiber (writer)
Slide 17 - contains 'schreib' as above and Tisch = table
On slides 21 and 22 go over the vocabulary once more
Give the children a few minutes to learn and test themselves and their partners on this vocabulary (on their hand outs)
Slide 23 - Simon (Hans) Says
Explain that we are now going to play 'Simon Says' in German. Use lollipop sticks to randomly choose 2 children to compete against each other. The first child to touch the classroom item that you say wins a reward.
Other variations:
Say 2 classroom items
Select 3 or more children to compete against each other
Pick something up randomly choose one child and ask 'was ist das' or 'ist das ...?'
Get one child to play the teacher
Play 'winner stays on' and if one child wins 5 in a row then they earn a special reward
Slide 24 - Ich packe in meiner Schultasche (2 activities to choose from - or do both)
Slide 25 - Prepositions
Go through the vocabulary on the slide and point out that some of these words have several meanings, but for today we will focus on the first one listed in each case. Give the children a minute or so to learn them
You may also want to point out how the gender changes depending on the case but as this is primary school level, don't say they are wrong if they get the article incorrect
Slide 26 - Wo ist der Bleistift?
Place a pencil somewhere in the classroom where the children can see, next to another item that the children have learned today (e.g a book). Ask 'wo ist der Bleistift? Reward any children who say 'der Bleistift ist neben das* Buch'
*Again, point out that the correct answer will be 'neben dem Buch' because the noun following 'neben' takes the dative case. At primary school level, just make the children aware that these different cases exist
Repeat with different items and prepositions. Now give the children 5+ minutes on their tables to ask and answer questions using different classroom items in different positions so that their partners can use different prepositions
Assessment and Evidence
Observe and ask questions
After the children have been practising 'wo ist der Bleistift', randomly select and reward children who can answer similar questions, combining classroom items with prepositions
Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after 'wo ist der Bleistift'
Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 27 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
